How Watchtower is Insulting the LGBT Community
A Questionable Video
In recent months Watchtower has said a few things that attracted the attention of the media. It’s most recent such release has some confused over whether or not it is insulting. For an efficient discussion about this video, please watch it before reading on. It isn’t too long:
So after having seen this video which side have you found yourself? Are you wondering how this video is insulting and in what way it is a message of hate? If so, then you are in the right place because that is what we are going to discuss. In order to understand this with context, you must consider the target audience and know a bit more about Watchtower doctrine than you may know currently.
The Target Audience and Some Doctrine
While they would be thrilled if the children and families of the world were watching this video, the target audience is actually Jehovah’s Witness children for the most part. This fact changes the perception of the video a bit. How? Well take for instance the bit at the 1:15 – 1:24 mark. To those unfamiliar with their doctrine this scene may seem innocent; however, what it really is, is a death threat – let me explain.
Jehovah’s Witnesses (though, surprisingly some of them do not realize it) believe that only Witnesses will survive the end, or Armaggeddon.
Only Jehovah’s Witnesses, those of the anointed remnant and the “great crowd,” as a united organization under the protection of the Supreme Organizer, have any Scriptural hope of survivingthe impending end of this doomed system dominated by Satan the Devil. – Watchtower 1989 Sep 1 p.19
During the final period of the ancient world that perished in the Flood, Noah was a faithful preacher of righteousness. (2 Peter 2:5) In these last days of the present system of things, Jehovah’s people are making known Gods righteous standards and are declaring good news about the possibility of surviving into the new world. (2 Peter 3:9-13) Just as Noah and his God-fearing family were preserved in the ark, survival of individuals today depends on their faith and their loyal association with the earthly part of Jehovah’s universal organization. – Watchtower 2006 May 15 p.22 “Are You Prepared for Survival?
Yes, the destruction of the gross sinners in those cities was eternal, as will be the destruction of the wicked at the end of the present system of things. – Watchtower 1990 Apr 15 p.20
If you are not a Jehovah’s Witness when Armaggeddon comes, you have little (indeed, none according to these) hope to survive. You may be thinking that this is all over the little ones heads, but believe me, as a child in the Watchtower organization it was not over my head. I even had terrible dreams about it. The children are shown depictions of what will happen at armaggeddon, such as these:
The text that explains these artist renditions, as if the text was necessary, clearly explains who these people are and why what is happening to them is happening. They were not part of Jehovah’s Organization, and this is what happens to those people. There is even wording used at times that is so horrific you need not have an accompanying picture.
In poetic language, the psalmist prophesies that the King’s ‘arrows are sharp, piercing the hearts of his enemies’ and ‘making peoples fall before him.’ The carnage will be earth wide. Jeremiah’s prophecy foretells: “Those slain by Jehovah in that day will be from one end of the earth clear to the other end of the earth.” (Jer. 25:33) A parallel prophecy states: “I saw also an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice and said to all the birds that fly in midheaven: ‘Come here, be gathered together to the great evening meal of God, so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of military commanders and the flesh of strong men and the flesh of horses and of those seated on them, and the flesh of all, of freemen as well as of slaves and of small ones and great.’—Rev. 19:17, 18.” – Watchtower 2014 Feb 15 p.7
I was present for the congregation study of this article. At these studies, the paragraphs in the articles have question and answer parts for audience participation. It was very funny to them that day, thinking about the birds eating all the dead people. One commenter even remarked how the birds outside, “look hungry.” These are the sort of discussions that are had right amongst little ones, and they are terrifying to those that pay attention. I can remember having nightmares that attest to that fear.
Harmless Point of View or Insulting Death Threat?
I earlier made reference to the part of the video time stamped 1:15 – 1:24. I once again invite you to rewatch that part of the video with all of this information in mind.
Does it take on different meaning to you? I know it would to me, knowing exactly what awaits those who can’t get on that plane. Consider further, what is it that Jehovah’s Witnesses are known for? Going door to door spreading their message right? How does it feel to know that some Witness little girl or boy is telling your kids at school that if gay people don’t change they’ll be eaten by birds?
Don’t let Watchtower fool you. Over the years they have become masters at insidous methods of double talk and it takes real effort to get at the point of what they are saying. The message of this video is clear: gay people are unnacceptable, and God will kill them in horrific ways for being gay. Not insulting? If you still think not, we will have to agree to disagree.
